About Emergent

Independent management consultancy for Boards and executive teams who want organisations that run on their judgement, not their presence.

Emergent Consulting is an Australian management consultancy. We help medium and large organisations connect people, processes and technology so they can grow, meet their obligations and make decisions on evidence. We are vendor-neutral and technology-agnostic. We have worked with many top vendors across the technology stack. We do not sell software and we take no commission. Our only stake is in the work we deliver with you.

Why we exist

In many organisations, the leadership team is what holds the systems together.

It is rarely anyone's fault. Each system was a sensible decision when it was made. Over the years, the numbers, the handovers and the hard calls come to depend on a few people being there. The organisation ends up running on their presence.

We exist so it can run on their judgement instead, with the systems, reporting and decision rights designed so the organisation carries the load, not the people leading it.

Two ways an organisation can run
On your presence
→
On your judgement
The Board

The Board pack is assembled by hand the week before every meeting, and someone senior checks every number.

→

The Board pack comes out of the systems, and directors can rely on what they read.

Decisions

Decisions queue for you, because you are the only one who can see the whole picture.

→

Decision rights are clear, and decisions are made where the information sits.

When you are away

The work slows when you take leave, and waits for you when you return.

→

The organisation keeps moving in the direction you set, whether you are in the room or not.

Map your own decision rights →

How we work with Boards and executive teams

We start from how the organisation should run, not from products.

Operating-model first

We map how services, support and governance need to work before we talk about platforms. Systems are chosen to serve that design, not the other way around.

Vendor-neutral and technology-savvy

We are independent of every vendor, but we know the major platforms in your industry, how they behave in the real world, and how to implement them in a best-practice way.

Fixed-timeframe programs

Every engagement has a named timeframe, a clear outcome, and one senior owner accountable to you.

Board-ready artefacts

We write for governance forums. Strategies, recommendations and plans are prepared so a Board or executive can test them, challenge them and then stand behind them.

Accountable past the decision

We do not stop at a recommendation. We stay involved through implementation planning and stabilisation so that decisions turn into ways of working.

What drives us

Our work is driven by a simple idea: better-run organisations create better outcomes for the people they serve, the people they employ and the communities they sit in.

That shows up in three commitments:

Client and social impact

We measure success by the value created for your organisation and the people you serve, not by how many hours we bill.

Better work for your staff

We want your people to spend their time on meaningful work, not fighting systems.

Reputation and trust

We care about the quality of decisions and the audit trail behind them, so that your Board, regulators and partners can trust what they see.

The principles we work to

You will see the same principles across every engagement:

Collaborative relationships

We work with your Board, executives and staff as partners. Straight conversations, shared goals, no spin.

Client-centric excellence

Every engagement is tailored to your organisation's context and constraints. We say no when the work is not in your interests.

Practical innovation

We bring forward-looking ideas, but they must stand up in your environment and be operated by your people, not just ours.

Sustainable growth

We design for long-term success: solutions that continue to work as you grow, staff change and regulations move.

Who we work with

We work with medium and large organisations across Australia where systems decisions affect people, safety, funding and reputation, not just internal efficiency.

Typical clients are:

Boards and Chairs who need a defensible path for major technology and operating-model decisions

CEOs and executive teams facing several core system changes over the next few years

CFOs and COOs carrying the load of stalled implementations, manual work and scattered reporting

Most of our work now comes from repeat clients and referrals, which is how we prefer it.

Leadership

Emergent Consulting was founded by Anthony Butler, GAICD, who leads the firm's work with Chairs, Boards and executive teams. He started Emergent to close the gap between what software vendors build and what organisations actually need.

Anthony has spent his career with organisations that must meet high standards for safety, quality and compliance while staying financially viable. He has watched many get stuck between "we should do something" and "we'll wait until conditions are right", and his work is to move them forward with decisions their Board can defend. His advice is vendor-neutral and direct: no commissions, no allegiances, and a plain answer, including when the right answer is not to proceed.

When you work with Emergent, you work with a small, senior-led team that stays with you from first conversation to final handover. We do not hand you to a junior team once the work is won.

Role in your engagement

Anthony will set the direction at the start of your engagement and keep the decision moving, because organisations most often stall between "we should do something" and "we'll wait until conditions are right". He will work directly with your Chair, CEO and executive on strategy and the decisions that shape the program, review progress at each key milestone and step in where senior judgement is needed. Day-to-day delivery stays with your named senior consultant, and you will get direct answers, including when the right answer is not to proceed.

Relevant experience

  • Founded Emergent to close the gap between what software vendors build and what organisations actually need, built its vendor-neutral method, and has led its work since.
  • Knows the software market across every major class of business system, and takes no commissions, referral fees or incentives from any vendor, so his advice answers to the client alone.
  • Oversees programs that run digital strategy, parallel software selections and implementation planning for one organisation under a single governance structure, with each major decision taken to the Board.
  • Speaks to Chairs, directors and executive audiences on how organisations make, fund and govern technology decisions.

He also leads best practice reviews of systems already in place, and the implementations that follow.

  • Led a best practice review of an existing client management platform, assessing configuration, processes and adoption across onboarding, scheduling, billing, payroll and reporting, with the recommendations taken into a follow-on implementation.
  • Turned recorded training sessions into organisation-specific work instructions, so operating knowledge stayed with the client after go-live.
  • Has led data platform, analytics and enterprise application projects for multinational organisations.
